Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Dylan Hixon. I’m 26 years old and I’m an operator at Hunter Valley Operations (HVO).

When did you start in the mining industry and what was your first job?

I’ve been in the mining industry since 2014 where I started as a boiler maker.

How different is your job to what you wanted to be as a kid?

Not much different I’ve always been exposed to mining industry, I remember when I was younger I wanted to be a plant mechanic, but I had the chance to be a boiler maker and I jumped at the chance.

What’s a usual day at work entail?

We start with a H-COM to find out what has happened in the pit while we have been gone and what equipment we will be on for the day. Then we make our way out to our heavy equipment and start to follow runs that we have been instructed through our two way or through our modular computer. Then that’s my day pretty much, we will stop for lunch and refuelling if needed.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job would be the crew and how you can help the company build and expand in the Hunter Valley.

The worst thing?

I don’t really have a worst thing but if anything, probably the heat. It can get hot!

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?

The biggest challenge was probably getting use to driving on the left side of the truck and adapting to that.

What has been your proudest achievement?

At the moment my proudest achievement is yet to be achieved but I hope to in the next coming year!

What’s something about your job that would surprise people to know?

That there are many different coal seams so no day is the same.

What’s a funny story about your work?

None that I’m willing to have recorded!

What do you do in your downtime?

I like to go camping with my partner and spending time with my dogs and at the gym. I also play AFL for the local team in Singleton. This year I am also their President.

The mining industry gets more than its fair share of criticism. What is your view of our industry and the impact is has?

I believe the mining industry is hugely important to the Australian workforce and economy and that it has helped shape our country. There are so many things to see and learn in this industry. I love this industry and don’t see myself leaving it anytime soon.
