This month the Complete Parts and @ The Coalface $500 Community Gift goes to the Emerald Show Society Inc., a respected institution with a rich history in the central Queensland mining community.
To shed light on their enduring impact, we spoke with Yvonne O’Neill, General Manager of the Emerald Show Society, who shared insights into the society’s mission, achievements and the profound impact it has had on the community.
Founded in 1929, the Emerald Show Society is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the region’s agricultural, pastoral, and horticultural industries.
“The Emerald Show Society has been a staple in the community for 95 years, serving as a platform to celebrate agriculture, local talent, and community spirit,” said Yvonne.
“We aim to engage and educate using entertainment, exhibitions, and competitions to enhance community spirit and knowledge of local industry.”
The Society’s mission is embodied in their signature events, such as the Annual Emerald Agricultural Show, BBQ and Beer Fest, and Taste Central Highlands Field to Fine Dining. These events, including collaborations like the Big Beer Fest with Capricorn Events, draw significant participation and enthusiasm from the local community.
The positive impact of these events on the community is substantial.
“Our events significantly contribute to the economic vitality, educational enrichment, social cohesion and cultural vibrancy of the Emerald community.
“In 2023 alone, we directed over $125,000 to local businesses, awarded $45,000 in prizes, and supported community and sporting groups with $32,500.”
This financial infusion, along with 2,550 competition entries, fosters a vibrant, engaged and active mining and larger agricultural community.
Volunteering and membership are the lifeblood of the Emerald Show Society. Yvonne is inviting community members to get involved, as there are various opportunities available.
“Community members can volunteer for setup, management and clean-up tasks, steward or organise specific sections and join planning committees.
“Additionally, they can participate in fundraising events, secure sponsorships, and promote the show within the community.”
For those who wish to become members, a $30 annual fee provides significant benefits, including a two-day adult pass to the show, invitations to exclusive events and entries into the members’ gate prize draw.
Despite their success, the Emerald Show Society faces challenges.
“We struggle with inadequate facilities, funding and a shortage of volunteers during event times, which can impact our ability to organise and run successful community events.”
Yet, the society’s resilience shines through in their continued commitment to supporting the community.
“Being part of the Emerald Show Society offers a sense of fulfillment and community connection. And unlike what the name might suggest, it’s more than just about the annual show. It’s a volunteer community that’s important to Emerald residents all year round. For me, contributing to the success of an organisation with such a rich history brings a deep sense of satisfaction, knowing that my efforts directly benefit the community and help preserve local traditions.”
