Derby Day

Gresford’s Billy Cart Derby and Easter Fair is on Saturday
March 31 and Glencore’s Ravensworth Opencut will again
be competing to take home the trophy.
Ravensworth Opencut are not only the major sponsors of this great family
event, but they have also entered a team into the Derby and they are not
alone.
This year the battle of the mines is back on with Mt Owen Complex, Liddell
Coal Operations, Ravensworth CHPP and Ravensworth Opencut all vying for
the prestigious trophy.
Whether it’s modifying last year’s Billy cart, or building a new cart from
scratch, each mine is hard at work to make theirs the fastest, so they can take
home the trophy, and more importantly the bragging rights.
Laura Barben, Ravensworth Opencut’s Environment and Community
Coordinator says the pressure is on for them, especially as they are the event
sponsors. “There was some contention last year about the winner, and this
year the rivalry has definitely stepped it up a notch. But I’m backing our Bob
the Billy Cart all the way.” Laura went on to say that rivalry aside, the race
was all about working together, having fun and supporting a great community
event. “We’d love to see even more people there this year, especially those in
the mining industry.”
Be sure to head out to Gresford on Easter Saturday and check out all the
action. There will be local stalls, jumping castles, cowpat lotto, gumboot
throwing competition, performances and live music, not to mention all the
fabulous food, guaranteeing an amazing day out for the whole family.
