Tell us about the business.
Kings Engineering is a leading NSW engineering business that provides mechanical, electrical, fabrication and general machining services to the mining industry.
We provide complete open-cut mining equipment services, including overhauls and repairs of drills, dozers, graders, water carts and haul trucks. We also overhaul a variety of Caterpillar components like final drives, front wheel groups, air tanks and accumulators. Underground mining overhauls and servicing is another area of proven expertise.
Kings has also built a strong reputation across many different sectors, including rail and infrastructure.
How long have you been doing business?
Kings Engineering celebrated its one hundredth year in 2023. We have seen many changes and supported a multitude of industries over that time, with services to the mining industry central to our success.
How many people work for the business?
We have around 80 people working at our Rutherford and East Maitland workshops.
Describe a typical day at ‘The office’.
There is never a typical day at Kings. When you support such a wide variety of industries, you are constantly overhauling or repairing many different types of equipment, from mining to large infrastructure machines and the manufacture of drill parts. We also assist with many breakdowns, so there are always tight schedules to meet.
What are the biggest challenges facing your business?
Our modern machine shop is central to our success. We have heavily invested in our machine shop capabilities, and this means we require highly skilled machinists, of which there is an industry shortage.
What are the biggest opportunities for your business right now?
We have a massive advantage as we can carry out most repairs onsite due to our wide variety of trades and services. This helps us meet customer demands. Our modern machine shop also means we can repair and reverse engineer most parts to assist customers in reducing their downtime.
What is the business most proud of?
We were very proud to celebrate our centenary. We have had to evolve to stand the test of time. Recent jobs like supplying four overhauled roadheaders to a tunnelling project in Canada and locally completing full overhauls on 793F and 789C Cat dump trucks show how we have diversified to reach that milestone.
Community or other causes close to its heart and values?
Kings has a long standing passion for training and skills development. Our Apprenticeship Program has been creating fulfilling careers for over 40 years, all under the careful guidance and support of skilled supervisors and tradespersons within a supportive environment.
Any employees that deserve a shout out?
We really appreciate what all our employees do to make us successful, especially our tradespeople. Without their tireless commitment and skills, Kings Engineering would not have been able to provide the multitude of services to all our longstanding customers over the last 100 years.
