Tell us about the business.
Core Mine Pty Ltd is a consultancy specialising in mining competence. Our services range from management consulting, leadership training and exam preparation for Open Cut Examiners and Mine Managers. We’ve also developed a webapp (CoreMOC) that helps industry maintain their compliance.
How long have you been doing business?
We started in February 2021 – feels like only yesterday!
How many people work for the business?
We have a team of 5 highly capable members with extensive experience in mining. Each member has their own niche and we draw on each other’s experience to match our client’s needs.
Describe a typical day at ‘The office’.
We’re not often in our Singleton office! We have a lot of face time on sites across NSW. When we are in our offices, we manage our programmers who continually evolve our CoreMOC webapp, as well as host workshops in our boardroom. We’re directly above Cervoz Café – super convenient for our caffeine fix.
What’s the best thing about the business?
Being significant and leaving a legacy. It’s very fulfilling and rewarding seeing the impact we have on individuals and mine sites. The other great thing is flexibility. We can (mostly) tailor our working hours to suit our personal lives. We get to see the kids and family more often!
What are the biggest challenges facing your business?
Reducing talent pool. Every year the pipeline of incoming talent into our industry seems to be reducing. Another challenge is the temptation to grow too quickly. We’ve been able to keep each other in check and honing our ability to say, “not now, but thanks!”.
What is the biggest opportunity for your business right now?
Same as before – a reduction in skilled mining professionals places pressure on organisations to level up their existing staff. Hopefully we can continue to provide meaningful services to help organisations achieve this.
What is the business most proud of?
Our CoreMOC webapp has nearly 20% of all of NSW practicing certificate holders using it.
Our CoreOCE program is becoming a household name for those looking to prepare for the exams with the NSW Resources Regulator. Over 140 have been part of the program in our 3 year existence.
We’ve also secured contracts with the NSW Resources Regulator to assist with their compliance activities. We’re proud to be held in such esteem to be trusted with an important role.
Community or other causes close to its heart and values?
We sponsor a few local groups, Singleton Strikers, Soft Cogs Inc, Witmore Enterprises. We have also gotten behind a local mountain bike rider, Grant Jones, who is killing it on the national scene!
Any funny or heartwarming stories to share?
In one of our leadership programs, the participants build a kids push bike as part of the activity. What they don’t know is that the built bikes are then donated to local kids in need. Pretty heartwarming to see the looks of the kids faces when they are handed their bikes. It’s really rewarding for the participants also. We team up with local charities (such as Witmore Enterprises) to make this happen.
Any employees that deserve a shout out?
It’s clichéd but all employees deserve a wrap. Ange for not letting anything get in her way. Geoff for his deep insight and pragmatic approach at high levels of organisations. Macca for his real-world application of his knowledge. Ross for his empathetic way of how he does things. And of course, all the partners as they play a big part too.
