Water and minerals are natural resources we need to live in our modern world, but how can we use them responsibly? This was one question explored by Collinsville State High School students in a bespoke workshop delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA). 

The sustainability workshop had Year 9 students unearth mineral extraction processes and modelling to show how this process can impact the environment over time if it is not done responsibly. 

Anna Reeves, Collinsville SHS principal, said the workshop had been a real eye-opener for the students, giving them an insight into the natural resources they take for granted. 

“They also conducted a water filtration experiment which showed them why it is important to identify water quality and have efficient processes for water treatment, transportation and storage,” said Anna. 

Glencore Coal partnered with the QMEA to deliver the workshop. 

Anthony Exelby, Human Resources Manager at Glencore Coal said the workshop had been designed to complement the Year 9 science curriculum and apply this knowledge to real world situations. 

“We take a scientific approach to environmental management across our operations, from the responsible extraction of minerals to water treatment during the operational phase,” said Anthony. 

“I think the students will have a much greater appreciation of the effort by resource companies, like Glencore Coal, to look after the land and water involved in their operations.”

The QMEA is the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC). Katrina-Lee Jones, QRC’s Director for Education, Skills and Education, said after the workshop the students had a much greater interest in environmental issues and what they can do to create a more sustainable world.

“This workshop also highlighted the diverse roles dedicated to sustainability mining practices in our sector – environmental scientists, technologists and engineers, they are all in high demand,” she said.

“I hope this workshop has increased awareness of sustainable mining practices and sparked an interest in future studies that provide a career pathway in our sector.”
