The Lake St Clair Charity Bike Ride, organised by the Rotary Club of Singleton, is celebrating 10 years of raising money for local charities and organisations on August 30.
Hundreds of cyclists have made the journey to Lake St Clair over the years to partake in the ride that aims to spread the word of riding and a healthy lifestyle to communities and promote a safe, fun, responsible and sustainable riding atmosphere while raising funds for worthwhile causes.
This year the ride is raising funds for Witmore, a disability support service based in Singleton.
Chair of the event and Singleton Rotary member Peter Flockhart said events like this are Rotary’s bread and butter.
“Events like this are what we do. Raise money and support our community.
“It’s important for us to do this work and get the Rotary name out there.
“It gets people from all over the area plus outside the area, we have riders who come from Newcastle, down towards Sydney, we get riders from everywhere and it brings people together. It’s a lot of fun and of course we are raising money for the likes of Witmore,” Peter said.
Prior to the pandemic, the event would attract hundreds of riders but that number has dropped over the last couple of years to about 70 in 2024.
Peter is hoping being the 10th year they can get more people involved.
“The more the merrier and ultimately the more money that can be donated to Witmore.”
The event is largely supported by the Soft Cogs Cycling Club, a team of riders from the Hunter Valley that share their love of riding bikes far and wide, and Glencore’s Mt Owen mine site.
There are lots of ways to support the event, including purchasing a supporter t-shirt with an apt slogan.
“The Not For Sooks” supporter tees are designed by one of the Soft Cogs riders. And it’s fitting because when you look at the terrain, the elevation changes, this ride is definitely not for sooks!
“That’s why we have the three distances too; they all start at the Lake St Clair campgrounds just at the varying distances.”
