EUNGELLA’S ARTISTIC HAVEN

Cedar Gallery @ The Coalface

After a scenic drive through the lush rainforests of Eungella in the back hills of Mackay, I found myself at Cedar Gallery, a hidden gem nestled by Broken River.

This unique spot offers a delightful blend of local art, history, and a taste of Eungella’s rich heritage, all set against the stunning backdrop of the “land of the clouds.”

Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the gallery owners, Owen and Kerry. Their passion for art and love for their picturesque sanctuary was immediately evident.

The gallery boasts an impressive collection of locally produced paintings, sculptures, pottery, glasswork, and more. Owen, with his engaging humour, guided us through an hour-long tour, sharing personal stories behind each piece of artwork.

One of the standout features of Cedar Gallery is its profound love affair with timber, particularly the rare Red Cedar, Toona Australis. Once abundant in the sub-tropical rainforests of Eungella, this majestic tree now stands as a rare beauty. Owen’s craftsmanship and those of other local artists in shaping and moulding this precious wood is truly remarkable, from intricate wooden doors adorned with 3D artwork to beautifully crafted furniture pieces.

The gallery’s ethos is perfectly captured in their quirky yet profound philosophy on art: “Art. It’s hard to define. It comes from the individual – translated onto paper, canvas, material or other fandangle and is put out into the world for every little beady eye to scrutinise it.”

At Cedar, they believe in the freedom of artistic expression, encouraging creativity without boundaries.

Our tour concluded with a delightful grazing platter and a selection of local beverages. Sipping on bubbly and enjoying the serene views of Broken River, I felt completely at home, thanks to the warm hospitality of Owen and Kerry. The experience was made even more special by the small tour group size, capped at 10 people, ensuring a personalised and intimate experience.
