School holiday activities designed to nurture children’s creativity and promote problem-solving skills are a key component of Anglo American’s commitment to driving thriving communities.
Aiming to bridge the gap in access to local holiday programs in Moranbah, Moura and Middlemount where it operates mines, Anglo American has been providing activities since 2022 to boost well-being and enhance educational outcomes.
Social Performance Manager Lynda Pollock said the programs had significant benefits to regional communities including improving mental health, boosting self-esteem as well as promoting social and educational opportunities outside the classroom.
“They have been well-received in the community and we receive positive feedback every time we host these activities,” she said.
“The programs not only provide much-needed activities during the school holidays but also help address childcare challenges faced in the community – all while ensuring the kids have fun.
“We are now looking forward to the next school holidays to ensure local kids continue to have access to fun and educational opportunities in and out of school.”
The winter school holiday programs, held across all Anglo American’s operating locations in the Bowen Basin, featured a variety of activities designed to engage children of different age groups. These programs included STEM, arts, and sports activities, each contributing uniquely to the development of the participants.
The STEM program, led by Carlo Blak from Bricks 4 Kidz, used Lego to foster creativity and problem-solving skills. The hands-on approach helped enhance literacy, numeracy, and communication skills among the participants, making learning both fun and impactful.
In the arts program, Julianne Holland from Aphrodite Art School guided students through activities such as creating affirmation magnets, rainbow tambourines, watercolour affirmation cards, and nature journaling. This program was crucial in nurturing the children’s cultural awareness, creativity, critical thinking and self-expression. The workshops provided a platform for individual artistic expression and contributed to improved academic performance and decision-making skills.
The sports program featured Ninja Warrior courses hosted by Aussie Inflatables. These inflatable obstacle courses offered a fun and challenging environment for all age groups, promoting team building, communication, and problem-solving skills. Physical activities like these are known to boost mental wellbeing and foster soft skill development, making them an essential part of the holiday program.
But it wasn’t just for the kids… there is plenty of photographic evidence of the adults taking part too!
