In the stunning little town of Bulga, you’ll find Bulga Tavern, a charming establishment overlooking the river and historic Bulga Bridge.
Formally The Cockfighter Creek Tavern, new owners Lee and Warren have tastefully renovated the now Bulga Tavern whilst keeping its original nostalgic and warm country feel.
After hearing locals boast about the tavern on numerous occasions I took my trusty food review sidekick, my sister Sarah, to see what all the hype’s about. So, on a brisk, sunny Thursday we made our way to Bulga for some tucker.
Passing over Bulga Bridge, the first thing you see is the quaint little tavern with a large, covered beer garden/outdoor dining area and an outdoor kids’ playground out the front inviting families, locals and visitors to stop in for a feed and drink while the little ones play nearby.
Welcoming you inside is a large, fully stocked bar featuring a gylco beer system with six beers on tap and a post mix; an old school jukebox; and plenty of fully airconditioned seating for toasty, comfortable dining during the coming colder months.
Sarah and I were absolutely starving and were happy to see a diversified, homely menu with breads, light meals, pub classics, burgers, salads, kids meals and desserts on offer.
Starting with the Cheesy Chilli & Bacon Bread which came as 4 freshly toasted slices, I thought I would only have one to save room for my main. But my god, the cheesey goodness took hold and we had quickly devoured two pieces each. The slight chilli kick made for a delicious variation of traditional garlic bread. You can see just how much Sarah enjoyed her bread in Exhibit A.
Moving on to our mains, Sarah ordered a half rack of the Smokey BBQ Pork Ribs marinated in smokey BBQ sauce, served with chips and salad. I went for a classic Scotch Fillet Steak cooked medium rare with veg and mash, and a garlic prawn topper.
When you head to a country pub or tavern you hope for homely, filling, country style meals that feel like a Sunday night at Grandma’s house. That’s exactly what our meals tasted like at Bulga Tavern; both big enough to fill a hungry miner come knockoff, tasty enough to lighten the mood of the grumpiest of operators and hearty enough to impress the old timers looking to reminisce on the traditional and classic meals from their childhood.
On top of great food and an awesome atmosphere, the tavern runs a special $7.50 schnitty night on Wednesdays, cheap Jugs and Nuts on Fridays and a $15 roast on Sundays.
