This month the Complete Parts and @ The Coalface $500 Community Gift goes to The Pyjama Foundation, whose incredible work supports children in foster care across Queensland. Their annual toy drive, led by dedicated volunteers, ensures children in care experience the magic of Christmas.
“The toy drive started as a way to bring extra joy to the children and their families during what can be a tough time of year,” said Andrew Hannay, the Pyjama Foundation North Queensland Coordinator.
“We wanted to ensure they felt special and valued.”
Each year, the toy drive culminates in a local Christmas party with a visit from Santa, who delivers the gifts.
“Last year, we distributed toys to around 100 kids in care in North Queensland and their siblings. We expect to reach a similar number this year.
“One of the most heartwarming moments last year was when a little boy hugged Santa tightly and exclaimed, ‘you didn’t forget me!’ Those are the moments that make it all worthwhile.”
The foundation’s impact extends well beyond Christmas celebrations. It connects children with Pyjama Angels, volunteers who dedicate time weekly to mentoring and supporting children with learning activities.
“Most importantly, our volunteers give foster children the support they need to build confidence, develop skills and reach their full potential, despite a challenging start.”
Andrew highlighted the vital role Pyjama Angels play in providing stability.
“One Angel shared that she and her mentee spent weeks building confidence in reading aloud, which eventually helped the child present in front of their class for the first time.”
While the foundation began in Queensland in 2004, its support network now spans New South Wales and Victoria, with over 1,300 children currently in the program.
Andrew highlighted the significant challenges faced by foster children, including the lowest national education outcomes and frequent instability.
“Our program addresses these by improving their learning skills and offering long-term mentorship. Angels become an important, consistent figure in the child’s life.”
This holiday season, The Coalface is helping to support the Pyjama Foundation Toy Drive and you can also get involved by donating new, unwrapped toys for children aged 18 or younger or by applying to become a Pyjama Angel.
“We particularly need gifts for teenagers, as they are often the hardest age group to cater for. Board games, sports equipment and books are always appreciated.
“The joy from receiving a gift at Christmas might seem small, but for many children, it’s a symbol of being remembered and valued. That feeling of belonging can make a world of difference, especially for kids who’ve faced so much instability.”
Andrew also expressed gratitude for the support the foundation receives from the local community.
“Local businesses in Townsville and surrounds have been incredibly generous, with many stepping up to donate toys and games. This year, we hope even more groups will join in to make the holidays brighter for children in care.”
Reflecting on the foundation’s long-term impact, Andrew shared a touching example.
“We’ve had placements in Townsville that have continued for over 10 years. Angels have supported children in getting their first part-time jobs and achieving a sense of success and accomplishment.”
Looking ahead, The Pyjama Foundation aims to reduce the waitlist for children in foster care awaiting a mentor.
“By increasing awareness and building partnerships with local organisations, we’re aiming to recruit and train more Pyjama Angels. With more support, we can provide every child in care with the stability and guidance they need to thrive.”
