The Sarina Youth Centre is the latest recipient of our Community Gift, recognising the vital role it plays in the lives of young people across the Sarina district.

The centre provides a safe and welcoming space for young people aged 10 to 21, offering after-school activities, case management, and one-on-one support. From fun programs that build confidence to initiatives that tackle serious challenges, the centre is a cornerstone of support for the community’s youth.

Youth Development Officer Peta (PJ) Burridge said the centre’s focus is on giving young people opportunities to grow, belong, and connect.

“We provide a safe space for young people to socialise, explore their interests and build resilience,” she said.

“Every activity we run is about helping them feel valued and supported.”

A recent highlight was the Grand Central mural project, created by young people alongside Grasstree Beach artist Donna Maree Robinson and funded by Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal. PJ said the project showed the pride and creativity of local youth.

“The pride on their faces when the mural was unveiled said it all, and the feedback from the community has been amazing.”

The $500 Community Gift will go towards supporting future programs at the centre, including initiatives such as a music program to build performance skills and confidence, or a mountain bike program to encourage outdoor activity and resilience.

“Not every young person connects in the same way,” PJ explained.

“Some love art, some love music, and others thrive outdoors. By offering different pathways, we can give more of them a chance to succeed.”

The Sarina Youth Centre is also home to the Sarina Youth Support Service, a referral-only program offering one-to-one support for young people in need. PJ said the Community Gift will help ensure that young people continue to have opportunities to grow and belong.

“This support means more than just running activities. It gives young people the chance to try new things, gain confidence, and feel a stronger sense of connection in our community.”
