Cleaning Up Our Neighbourhood

Mount Pleasant Operations team members joined Thiess and SGS to clean up our neighbourhood as part of the Clean Up Australia Day Campaign.

Passionate employees came together to do their part and give back to their community, cleaning up local roads and land on Australia Day, 1 March 2020.

Clean Up Australia started around thirty years ago by ‘an average Aussie bloke’, known as Ian Kiernan. Now a nationwide initiative and annual event since 1990, Clean Up Australia Day inspires communities to work together and clean up our beautiful environment.

Joining in to spread the clean-up message, MACH Energy have again teamed up with some of their site contractors and local businesses to clean up their town earlier this month. External Relations Manager at Mount Pleasant Operations, Ngaire Baker, said the initiative has been close to the hearts of employees at MACH Energy.

“In 2019 I thought about asking for volunteers to join the clean-up day in Muswellbrook, however, I was constantly stopping to and from work to pick up rubbish on Wybong Road,” said Ngaire.

“So I spoke to representatives from our site contractors, Thiess, Sedgman and Fyfe and they agreed the best way to pitch in was to clean up our backyard, that is the section of Wybong Road from Bengalla Link Road, the stretch of road all employees take to get to and from Mount Pleasant.”

The team tackled the day with the goal of collecting every bit of rubbish from the stretch of road. In 2019 the team collected more than 20 bags of rubbish, pushing local business SGS to join in and lend a hand this year. “The clean-up message must be getting through as we only filled five bags, mostly bottles and cans with a few shopping bags and general rubbish thrown in,” said Ngaire.

It was a positive day, with all volunteers keen to lend a hand, chat to their colleagues, meet new people during the clean up and get a little exercise throughout the day. Enjoying the worthwhile experience, employees said they will be back again in 2021.

Ian started the initiative all those years ago wanting to make a difference in his own backyard, which was a fitting theme for this year’s crew. With SGS employee William’s parents still living on the property he grew up on next to Mount Pleasant. They truly were cleaning up their own backyard!

“Thanks must go to William and Tim, also from SGS and their management for allowing them the time to support this important community initiative,” said Ngaire.
