The Dig Deep Boxing Club, based in Dysart, recently made their presence felt at the Queensland Novice Boxing Titles held in Brisbane. The club sent six of their boxers to compete in the three-day tournament, and five of them emerged victorious, earning gold medals in their respective weight categories.
The team comprised of Les-Thomas Edwards (11 years old), Kyle Rodgers (13 years old), Dakai Rarasea (15 years old), Quincey Barwick (15 years old), Izaya Rarasea (18 years old), and Bradley McAlister (32 years old). The young boxers come from the Isaac Region, which includes Dysart, Clermont, Moranbah, and others who train out of Mackay.
The Queensland Novice Titles is one of the state’s biggest amateur boxing tournaments, and it’s designed for boxers with less than 15 fights. The competition is tough, and boxers need to weigh in and make sure they meet their nominated weight category to qualify. The event is not for the faint-hearted, and it requires immense dedication, discipline, and hard work to succeed.
Craig Storch, the head coach, and trainer Dale Barwick ensured that the boxers were ready for the challenge. The coaches were present to calm their nerves, keep them distracted, well-fed, and hydrated throughout the tournament. Their guidance and support proved to be crucial in helping the young boxers achieve success.
Out of the ten boxers put up for nomination, six got matches, and five of them emerged victorious. The Dig Deep Boxing Club’s commitment to discipline and hard work was evident in their performance, and their success at the tournament was well deserved.
Dig Deep Boxing Club has been working hard over the last two years to showcase boxing and make it more accessible to more people. The club has been holding development camps, sparring, and coaching clinics throughout North Queensland and the Isaac Region, where everyone comes together to share experiences and learn from one another.
The club’s focus is not only on teaching boxing skills but also instilling values such as respect, hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The core value, however, is discipline, which is crucial in all aspects of life, from choosing healthier food options to showing up for training and lifting others up instead of putting them down.
The success of Dig Deep Boxing Club would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of its coaches, boxers, members, families, friends, volunteers, and supporters.
The club would like to express its gratitude to the Isaac Regional Council for the use of the Dysart Youth Bus, which enabled the boxers to travel to Brisbane and back safely.
