WHAT AN ORESOME TRADES CAMP

Student trade-enthusiasts got hands on in August, participating in an Oresome Trades Camp in Blackwater delivered by the QMEA Resources Skills Academy in partnership with Whitehaven Coal.

Rebecca Vitale, Blackwater State High School principal, said the students were excited to focus on their trade skills and connect with experienced tradespeople.

“Experiences like this camp can make a big difference to students as they consider their career options.”

Dan Iliffe, Regional General Manager QLD said Whitehaven believed the trade camp was an important investment in local schools and the community where they operate.

“This is the first trade camp we have delivered in partnership with the QMEA and our team has enjoyed it just as much as the students,” Dan said.

“Four of our tradespeople joined the students in the camp, helping them build their skills and sharing how important trade roles are in resource operations in daily Toolbox Talks.”

Ten students, from Years 11 and 12, participated in the workshop from Blackwater State High School, Emerald State High School and Marist College.

Jen Hoyle, Director QMEA, said the camp gave students an opportunity to develop their teamwork, communication and leadership skills.

“The students worked in groups to complete a model light mine vehicle project over the three days.

“There were plenty of mechanical and electrical challenges, requiring problem-solving and consultation with trade mentors from Whitehaven – which is a valuable experience for young people who are looking to pursue an apprenticeship,” she said.

“These three days have opened their eyes to potential careers in resources and given them powerful insights about roles in the industry.”
