Tens of thousands flocked to McDonalds Jones Stadium on Sunday July 20 for the annual NSW Mining Voice for Mining Family Day.
Devastated fans watched the Newcastle Knights men’s side lose to the New Zealand Warriors in the dying seconds of their game however spirits were lifted when the women ran home a strong 36-20 win over the Wahs.
But the real winner on the day was mining.
Families cheered for the teams as they played in the iconic mining jerseys and the stadium was a sea of orange, an unmistakable visual reminder of the strong connections between mining, rugby league and community.
