WRHS @ The Coalface

The annual Upper Hunter Charity Golf Day is on May 9, another wonderful opportunity for the community, local businesses and industry to come together and raise funds for the life-saving service.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) celebrates 50 years of service in the northern region this year, and just like all those years of service there are plenty of wonderful events planned to celebrate and raise funds.

The Upper Hunter Charity Golf Day is one of those being held at Muswellbrook Golf Club on May 9.

Regional Partnerships Officer for the Hunter region Norma Burri came on board earlier this year and said she’s really looking forward to this year’s event.

“I’m excited for this event, coming off the back of the Hunter Valley Charity Golf Day and the Mudgee Celebrity Classic it’s going to be lots of fun. All the golf days are different, they all have a great vibe.

“We have lots of returning teams and sponsors already and the Golf Club has been very supportive as always.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting some of the Muswellbrook locals and working with some local vendors including Simon from Double Picc. We have some great auction prizes and a raffle too.”

The guest speaker at this year’s Golf Day is Brandon Robinson-Smith. His story might sound familiar to our @ The Coalface readers as back in 2023 we sat down with Brandon to learn more about his story.

He was 21 years old when his car crashed just four kilometres from his front gate and lost his arm and shoulder. The WRHS was called to the scene at Mudgee and Brandon was flown to Westmead Hospital in Sydney for treatment.

The WRHS saved his life, and since then Brandon has become a great advocate for the Service.

“The Upper Hunter Golf Day is a perfect way to collaborate with local businesses and community, whilst raising much needed funds to keep the chopper in the air. This past month alone the helicopter was called out to four incidents in the Upper Hunter area, it’s so vital in our lives,” said Norma.

“Our volunteers are so passionate about the service and often a lot of them have had personal experiences with the WRHS.

“Every week when I’m out people tell me their own story when they needed the helicopter so everywhere I go someone has a story to tell me, it’s amazing.”

There are plenty of other events coming up to support the WRHS as well. The Hunter Valley Sports Luncheon is on 6 June with guest speakers Laurie Daley and Paul Sironen and the Upper Hunter Annual Ball is on 16 August.
