With the end of mining at BHP’s Mt Arthur operation getting closer there is now a dedicated platform for the community to find the answers to the big questions around what comes next for jobs, the community and the land.
In April this year BHP received approval from the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure to continue mining for an additional four years until 2030.
The company also committed to a $30 million Upper Hunter Community Fund to support the region as it prepares for the closure of the site.
The money will be delivered in partnership with the community through a shared decision-making model and will prioritise initiatives that support a number of things including job creation, education and training and improve the physical and mental health outcomes for residents.
Now there’s a ‘Powering What’s Next Hub’, an online platform that gives clear up-to-date information on what’s happening, how BHP is supporting the workforce and the community, and what the future looks like.
“With the approval to continue mining beyond 2026 now in place, mining at Mt Arthur Coal will continue until June 2030,” said NSW Energy Coal Vice President Liz Watts.
“We are committed to keeping the community informed at every stage and answer the questions that people have.
“People want to know what will the final landform look like? What’s happening with rehabilitation?
“All of these questions and more are answered by myself and members of the Mt Arthur Coal team on the Hub.
“We want to encourage the community to continue asking questions and submit them to us.
“We’re here to listen and give the facts and information the community needs about the planned closure of Mt Arthur Coal, every step of the way.”
