Scope Equipment Hire @ the Coalface

Tell us about the business.

My name is Jaime Price, and I am the owner of Scope Equipment Hire. After many years working in the water management industry I decided to go out on my own so I could assist customers with water management on mine sites, quarries and on civil jobs. This then grew into slurry management as we saw the requirement for dredging on various sites. At Scope we fabricate, sell, hire and repair all types of pumping equipment.

How long have you been doing business?

I started Scope Equipment Hire in late 2014 and we have progressively grown every year since.

How many people work for the business?

We are a small but dedicated team of ten staff, and we also regularly engage contractors to assist in high volume times. Our team are highly qualified and have many years of experience servicing all industries throughout Central Queensland.

Describe a typical day at ‘The office’.

Most of my days consist of working with our customers, either assisting them by phone or going onsite to supply technical advice on our pumps and other equipment. When they ask for help, it doesn’t matter how big or small the request is. It could be providing advice on the correct pump they need for a project and then supplying it, or simply showing them how to run the pump correctly “In Curve”.

What’s the best thing about the business?

I love what I do. Due to being in a specialised industry and with limited technical knowledge amongst our end users, our customers rely on our expertise to provide professional support to them. It’s very rewarding to be able to provide creative solutions to our customers to help them achieve their goals in a way that is efficient and cost-effective.

The worst thing?

Witnessing so many pumps being run incorrectly and the cost to repair!

What are the biggest challenges facing your business?

Because we are a niche business, finding experienced staff is our biggest challenge.

What is the biggest opportunity for your business right now?

Being able to offer quality low-cost pump repairs is a big opportunity for us at the moment.

What is the business most proud of?

Our outstanding reputation in the industry for providing technical, quality hire equipment and repairs. We have the skills, expertise and equipment to remove water quickly and efficiently, no matter the size of the project.

Community or other causes close to its heart and values?

Supporting our local community events is always rewarding. We support events such as Carnage Offroad, Powerhouse Muay Thai Boxing, Sarina Saints Soccer and the Moranbah BMX Club’s Weekend of Madness to name a few.

Any funny or heartwarming stories to share?

We attended a charity auction and after a few too many lemonades, Scope Equipment was the successful bidder on a very expensive guitar. None of us actually play a guitar so it has become a showpiece, but all for a good cause.

Any employees that deserve a shout out?

A shout out to Tony Simpson who runs our workshop. Tony has been with us for over seven years and is a valuable part of the business. If Tony can’t fix it, then it is impossible to repair.
