Hydraulink Coalface

Tell us about the business.

We are a distributor of Hydraulink hose and fittings products, as well as doing minor hydraulic component services such as cylinder repairs and seal replacements. We manufacture, supply and service hydraulic equipment to all the industries associated in the Hunter Valley region.

How long have you been doing business?

We started in July 2005, it will be 19yrs this year! I look back and somedays it feels like we only started a year or two ago. Back then I was a 1-man band, but we have had significant growth since then.

How many people work for the business?

We have 11 employees at our Hunter Valley branch. We are supported by other branches located in Rutherford and Thornton as well.

Describe a typical day at ‘The office’.

The day kicks off at 7am then anything can happen. With the nature of our industry, it can go from 0-100km/hr pretty quickly. Urgent response is the name of the game.

What’s the best thing about the business?

We really love the interaction with our customers. There is a friendly bit of banter back and forth, usually over the weekends footy results more than anything.

What are the biggest challenges facing your business?

Like most businesses in recent years getting the right employees that fit your requirements is a hard task. Apart from that, maintaining the level of service to customers is always a top priority.

What is the biggest opportunity for your business right now?

Obviously the mining and energy sectors are still strong, along with civil projects in the area. We are well equipped to support all these industries.

What is the business most proud of?

Being voted ‘Network Partner of the Year’ last year was pretty special. We competed against over 135 dealers across Australia and receiving this recognition was a reward for our efforts from our peers.

Community or other causes close to its heart and values?

We have been long supporters of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Like so many in the community the Greta bus accident is close to our heart. There have also been other unfortunate tragedies locally in recent times that are in the forefront of our minds. Apart from that we have always been keen to throw our support behind local sporting teams and charity events.

Any funny or heartwarming stories to share?

Our grandson Leo likes to visit and check out what’s going on. He’s not shy to let everyone know that he’s the real boss is in the house either. Apart from that a somewhat inappropriate Secret Santa (AKA Shane) is always a good laugh at the end of the year.

Any employees that deserve a shout out?

Look, everyone chips in when required to help each other out. However, I can’t not mention the three employees who have all notched up 11+ years of service, Craig Brown, Dale Cox, and Sally Beverley. They, with the rest of the team, are valued employees and contribute to the business equally.
