Tell us about the business.
Body Armour is an Australian company that specialises in the manufacturing of premium recovery and performance solutions. Founded by four friends united by a shared obsession for nutrition, performance, and a vision to create real change. With a combined 33 years of experience in the mining and construction industry, we recognised a significant gap in the market for recovery and performance solutions that are truly clean, genuinely effective, and free from hidden toxins, harmful chemicals, and misleading marketing.
Our mission stems from a simple belief: nutrition free from harmful chemicals and effective recovery are the most important pillars of optimal performance and therefore safety.
During my 15 years in the industry, I’ve witnessed world-class efforts placed on the latest technologies, systems, and processes to keep our workforce safe. However, one critical aspect often overlooked – the role of nutrition and recovery in safety-critical factors like focus, muscle movement, reaction time, sustained energy and mental strength. These factors, which are pivotal for performing high-stakes tasks, often lacked proper education and integration into safety strategies. Our business is in existence to support sites by bridging that gap.
How long have you been doing business?
Body Armour will be turning eight in October this year.
How many people work for the business?
23 team members make up the Body Armour family and the way things are going that number is likely to grow significantly this year.
Describe a typical day at ‘The office’.
Every day is different, ranging from the logistics and warehouse responsibilities, formulation design and testing at the lab, to travelling to sites where we work with the operations in delivering training to their crews on the fundamentals of body mechanics and the guides to managing some of the risk factors such as fatigue and heat stress.
What’s the best thing about the business?
Honestly, we all get our fuel from feedback. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing back from an individual telling us that we have impacted their lives through our solutions. Whether that’s through significantly improving their sleep or simply impacting their energy levels, it’s all fantastic and that’s definitely the best part of the business.
What are the biggest challenges facing your business?
Aside from the standard day-to-day challenges small to medium-sized businesses go through, the biggest challenge we are tackling is the education around the importance of effective recovery and nutrition. Knowledge is key to driving change.
What is the biggest opportunity for your business right now?
There is a clear appetite from individuals and employers to look into what is being consumed, to critically look into the ingredients that make up the formula. People want to make healthier choices, especially the new generation coming through. High-quality solutions without the use of artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners are the ethos of Body Armour, so we aim to offer a solid option for the health conscious.
Community or other causes close to its heart and values?
A passion project of ours which we will start to tackle this year is schools. We want to offer kids and their parents healthy options to what currently exists in the tuck shops. A great example of that is Zooper Doopers – 12 grams of sugar per stick and filled with artificial colours. We wonder why kids struggle to concentrate and various illnesses are on the rise. Nutrition plays a huge role in this.
Any employees that deserve a shout out?
I think everyone on the team deserves a shout-out! I’m extremely proud of everyone. I think I can speak on behalf of the team to give special praise to Oisin for the incredible work he does, overseeing many facets of the business, and the 110% he gives to the business day in and day out.
