The popular Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue School Mine Tours returned this year, with 19 students in Years 4, 5 and 6 from Broke and Jerry’s Plains Public Schools visiting Mount Thorley Warkworth on April 9.
During their visit, the students learnt about the whole mining process, including seeing some completed rehabilitation, and had a unique vantage point over West Pit South, where they were able to view the whole operation and ask the mine staff questions.
Afterwards, they visited and chatted with the dispatch team and saw firsthand how all aspects of the pit operation are coordinated in ‘real-time’.
On April 10, 33 students from Muswellbrook Public School visited Bengalla Mine where they enjoyed a very immersive experience.
The students engaged with staff including geologists, mining engineers and environmental scientists, participated in a drone tour of the mine and enjoyed a first-hand experience of the truck and excavator simulators. They were also able to see the pit in full operation.

Now in its sixth year of full operation, the School Mine Tours demystifies the mining process through a fact-based, firsthand educational experience.
The 2025 program is scheduled to deliver 17 tours to nine mine sites for around 600 students from primary and secondary schools across the Upper Hunter.
