Twelve participants have graduated from Glencore’s 2024 New South Wales First Nations Pathways Program (FNPP). This marks the most successful year in the NSW program’s history.
The program provides work readiness and training opportunities for Indigenous Australians who live on, or have connection to, the areas in which Glencore Coal operates in New South Wales.
Having completed the 26-week job-readiness training, 11 graduates have already gained employment.
Carrie Bendeich, Glencore Indigenous Programs Coordinator, emphasised the importance of the program in building essential job skills and education.
“The program is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills for employment and inspire them to reach their career goals.
“Through the program, our graduates have developed crucial skills and obtained all necessary mining qualifications. These skills not only prepare them for immediate employment but also equip them for long-term career success.”
Carrie also highlighted the broader impact of the graduates’ success on their communities.
“The success of our graduates extends beyond their individual achievements. It inspires their friends, families, and neighbours.
“This ripple effect can lead to greater community engagement and more individuals pursuing their own career pathways, especially in regional areas where employment opportunities are crucial.”
Maricky Hooper, a 2024 FNPP graduate, said the program has strengthened her confidence, and helped her achieve her goal of full-time employment.
“I went into this program hoping to build a stable career, and it delivered beyond my expectations,” Maricky said.
“Not only did I pick up the skills I needed for my future, but I also grew so much as a person.
“This program has helped me gain a Glencore traineeship and I’m excited to see where my career in the mining industry will take me.”
The FNPP is divided into two stages: job-readiness training and mine site experience. These stages include inductions, medicals, life-skills, leadership training, and on-site work experience, offering career opportunities in a range of roles, from operators to warehouse assistants, trades assistants, and bench support.
“It’s terrific that 11 participants have already secured employment and we’re confident that all 12 graduates will go on to succeed in their chosen fields,” said Carrie.
“It’s wonderful to watch their careers develop in the months and years ahead. Many former FNPP participants are still employed with Glencore, and are now mentoring and supporting the new groups, which is a testament to the program’s lasting impact.”
