Mining and Energy Union

In 2024, over 2,000 new mining and energy workers joined the Mining and Energy Union (MEU), standing together to improve pay and conditions in their workplaces. This remarkable growth reflects the impact of our Same Job, Same Pay campaign, which has already delivered over $25 million in annual pay increases for coal miners, with hundreds of millions more on the horizon.

While the MEU is proud to celebrate major wins, we also recognise the exceptional day-to-day work carried out across our union. Every day, our rank-and-file members, delegates, organisers, health and safety representatives, administrative and legal staff, and workplace Lodge Officials collaborate to make a tangible difference in the lives of members.

Here are four key reasons to join the tens of thousands of workers strengthening our industry through the MEU:

Winning Better Wages and Conditions

The MEU works every day to empower members to improve their rights at work. Our members, delegates, lodge and workplace officials organise through the union to improve pay and conditions through enterprise bargaining and ensure that these rights and conditions are enforced. Union-negotiated terms of employment backed by high membership deliver higher pay and better conditions in our industry.

Making Workplaces Safer

The mining and energy industries are inherently hazardous, making safety a top priority for the MEU. To uphold and enhance workplace safety standards, the MEU employs Industry Safety and Health Representatives (ISHRs), commonly known as check inspectors or “checkies”.

ISHRs play a critical role in maintaining safety across mining sites. They are empowered to inspect mine sites, investigate accidents, and issue notices when necessary, ensuring that workplaces adhere to the highest safety standards. With the MEU’s unwavering support, members can confidently refuse unsafe work conditions, knowing their union is there to protect them.

Access to Legal and Industrial Support

One of the most valuable benefits of MEU membership is access to expert legal and industrial support. Whether it’s addressing underpayment, mistreatment, unfair disciplinary action, or urgent legal matters, members have access to a world-class team.

The MEU provides free advice and representation for issues including workers’ compensation, superannuation, retrenchment, and unfair dismissal. Our dedicated legal team ensures that members’ rights are protected at every step.

Additional Benefits for You and Your Family

The MEU has a range of union programs and partnerships to benefit MEU members. Programs such as high education scholarships for dependents, financial assistance during events such as protected industrial action, funeral fund, mortality fund, and access to discounted products and services are all additional benefits enjoyed by MEU members.

As we enter 2025 stronger than ever, we invite you to join the MEU and contribute to our collective strength. If you work in mining or energy – whether as a permanent employee, labour hire, or contractor – there has never been a better time to stand with the union that stands with you.

The Northern Mining and NSW Energy District covers coal mining from Sydney to the Queensland along the eastern border and power generation across NSW.
