One of the most significant challenges for our industry is to make sure we are able to take advantage of future demand by training the next generation of world-class NSW mining employees.
Demand for workers is high. Mining companies tell us they’re struggling to fill many vacant positions. It’s a challenge that must be tackled if we’re to make the most of future opportunities.
It’s a key reason why the NSW Minerals Council is once again holding a series of mining industry careers events for high school students across NSW.
Things kicked off this year at the Northwest Regional Careers Expo in Tamworth, attended by over 2000 students. Thanks to a strong presence from local mining companies like Idemitsu (Boggabri Coal) and Glencore, mining was at the forefront of the event, providing an outstanding opportunity to showcase career paths our industry has to offer.
Our NSW Mining Careers Dinners are also being held throughout May and June. These dinners provide an opportunity for students to network with local employers, education and training providers to hear more about career pathways into mining employment.
The Hunter dinner was particularly well attended by around 200 guests, including local high school students and their parents who were able to network with representatives from the Hunter mining sector and also hear from some special guests who have forged a career in the mining industry.
Careers dinners in Dubbo and Orange were also well attended with over 130 students, parents and teachers taking the opportunity to network with local industry representatives at these events.
More dinners are being held in Wollongong and Campbelltown this month, with a solid turnout also expected at both these events.
The success of our NSW Mining Careers Dinners rely on support from our Member Companies, and we are grateful to those who have agreed to host information booths and provide guest speakers.
