OPINION – NSW Needs Mining

Throughout 2023 our world class NSW mining industry has continued to make the important contribution we are known for, and which so many people rely upon.

Coal mining jobs have hit record levels this year, with more than 25,000 miners and their families now living in our mining communities, including in the Hunter, Illawarra, Lithgow and Gunnedah regions. Our metals mining sector also continues to grow, with two new mines approved earlier this year. These new mines will soon join the existing metals mines in the Central and Far West in delivering economic benefits and jobs for local communities and our state.

NSW mining has also been at the forefront of the new State Government’s budget repair task, with an increase to mining royalty rates announced as part of this year’s state budget.

There have been challenges. The tragic Hunter bus crash earlier this year impacted many people in our industry and Hunter mining communities. We continue to mourn those who were killed or injured on that terrible night in June. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those facing their first Christmas without the loved ones they lost.

There have also been some great highlights.

The strong performance of the Newcastle Knights NRL team this season was extremely welcome, as was the Knights’ NRLW team winning a second consecutive premiership, with the support of our industry. Congratulations to all involved.

Looking forward, 2024 is shaping up to be a positive year for our industry. While coal prices have fallen from the record highs of 2022, coal export volumes are higher. More new metals projects are also in the planning pipeline, providing long term prospects for future industry growth, alongside our established coal producers.

NSW continues to need mining, and together we will continue to meet this need, with care and responsibility, throughout 2024 and beyond.

The NSW Minerals Council will also continue our strong advocacy on behalf of the NSW mining sector, mining families, supplier businesses, local mining communities, and all who rely on us.

I wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Stephen Galilee, CEO, NSW Minerals Council
