Eight year old Harper Matthews is about to do something most kids only dream of, represent Australia on the world stage. Next month, she’ll travel to Denmark for the 2025 UCI BMX Challenge World Championships, trading the red dirt of Moranbah for the international BMX circuit.

Harper’s BMX journey began not long after her family moved to the mining town.

“We had just moved to Moranbah and went down for a look and it looked like fun,” Harper said.

That first visit to the local track quickly turned into a full-blown passion.

Now a regular on the national and international racing scene, Harper’s already built an impressive resume. She placed fifth at the 2024 Australian National Championships in Perth and raced to top six finishes at the Oceania Continental Championships in New Zealand. Along the way, she’s collected memories, experience, and plenty of dust.

Out of all the tracks she’s raced, Sarina stands out as her favourite, while New Zealand was the most exciting place to visit.

Living in a small town hasn’t slowed her down, but it does come with its own set of challenges.

“There are lots of good riders in our region. But we live so far away we have to do lots of travel and don’t have easy access to professional coaches.”

Despite the distance, Harper’s love for the sport is what keeps her going.

“It’s fun and I get to ride with my friends. I also get to travel to lots of new places.”

She’s not only preparing to compete against some of the best young riders from around the globe, but she is also embracing the experience of international travel.

“It’s going to be colourful and I can’t wait to see the Little Mermaid statue.”

Harper is especially looking forward to connecting with other riders from different countries.

“I’m excited to do some jersey swaps and bring home some different race jerseys from other countries.”

As for strategy, Harper keeps things pretty straightforward.

“I make sure I eat hot chips and gravy and then I get on the gate and go for it.”

It’s not just Harper’s riding that’s impressive – it’s her initiative too.

“Supporters can pluck a duck in my online raffle at harpersducks.com, and there’s also an option to donate through the Australian Sports Foundation.”

She’s also quick to acknowledge those who inspire her, and it’s not a global superstar but a local rider who tops the list.

“My favourite rider is Maggie McDougall from Emerald. She’s really kind, works hard, and always takes the time to give me tips when we’re at the track.”

For a young rider who’s already travelled thousands of kilometres in pursuit of her goals, the road to Denmark is just the next step. And with her grit, good humour and love for the sport, Harper Matthews is on the right track.
