During NAIDOC Week 2023, Barada Barna proudly celebrated their Aboriginal culture with BHP Queensland on Traditional Country where they have the largest footprint in the world.

At the heart of this collaboration was a profound connection to land and heritage. Over 200 employees at Saraji and Daunia Mines were traditionally welcomed by Barada Barna Aborignal Corporation Directors, Niccy Muller, Lindsey Conway, Mel Terare and Donovan Cannon.

A special Smoking Ceremony was held as well as traditional performances by Uncle Randolph and the “Mintha Gunda” Dance troupe. Director and artist Mel Kielly was recognised for her commissioned piece that will be painted on the large wall that overlooks the cultural garden at Daunia mine site.

The celebration extended to the Civeo camps, where communities came together to embrace our culture, strengthen collaboration, and foster understanding. It was a time to reflect on the importance of respecting and preserving Indigenous traditions.

Barada Barna would like to extend a big thank you to the BHP Indigenous Engagement Unit and BHP East Coast Heritage Team for organising Naidoc on country through their mine sites and to the employees at Goonyella Riverside Mine, saying that the respect and collaboration of working together with the Barada Barna people means a lot.

NAIDOC Week 2023 served as a powerful reminder of our cultural heritage and the value of working together to create an inclusive society.
