Moranbah Miners opened their season with a dominant 58–24 win over Sarina, but the result was only part of the story at Darryl Bourke Oval. Round 1 marked the Darryl Bourke Memorial Night, with the club honouring a life member whose impact still shapes the Miners today.

Senior Club President Chris Bell said Bourke’s influence went far beyond the early days of the club.

“Darryl Bourke was instrumental in the development of the Moranbah Miners, alongside Pat Hannay. His contribution extended far beyond the physical building of the club, reflecting a genuine passion and commitment to its success,” said Chris.

“Through his company, Barak, Darryl was also the club’s major sponsor across three decades. Having our home ground named in his honour is a testament to the high regard in which he is held by everyone associated with the Miners.”

The memorial night brought together past and present, giving younger players a chance to understand the history behind the club.

“Hosting the memorial night provided an opportunity for the younger generation to learn about one of our club’s true legends, while also allowing those who knew Darryl to come together and honour his life and contribution.

“It is extremely important to us to celebrate our history and recognise the people who have helped shape the strong position we are in today. The night also gave us a chance to show the extended Bourke family just how much Darryl means to our club and community.”

Held at the first home game of the season, the occasion also marked another milestone for the Miners.

“Darryl passed away on 17 January, so it felt fitting to honour him at our first home game of the season.

“The occasion was made even more special as it marked the first time the Miners fielded an Under 20s team, adding another proud moment to the evening.”

On the field, Moranbah ran in eleven tries in a performance that showed attacking strength, despite a physical contest.

“While the scoreboard may not have reflected it at times, the match was a very physical contest. We were able to score in just the second minute, which set the tone early.

“Sarina had their moments as well, crossing for five tries, but Moranbah came away with a 58–24 win. Our attack is looking sharp, although conceding five tries is something coach Josh Stowers will no doubt be keen to address.”

Four players crossed for doubles in a strong team effort, Michael Bell, Munro Stephens, Fe’ao Maka and Seth McGilvray.

Off the field, the turnout spoke volumes.

“This was the largest home crowd we have seen, with the community turning out in force to honour Darryl.

“I would like to sincerely thank everyone for the respect shown during the speeches and the minute’s silence prior to the A Grade match. The evening also featured many great stories that highlighted Darryl’s lasting impact on the club.”

With wins across all grades and four teams now competing, the Miners are setting their sights high for the season ahead.

“We’ve made a strong start to the season, with wins across all three grades. Our ladies’ team will kick off their campaign on 9 May at our next home game against Souths, and we’re excited to host four games at Darryl Bourke Oval.

“With all four grades competing this year, we believe we are well within reach of contending for the overall club championship. There’s a real sense of optimism around the group, and we’re confident we can be competitive across all teams as the season progresses.”
