Eight students from the Wellington Clontarf Academy were miners for a day at the Moolarben Coal Mine, as part of the site’s partnership with the Clontarf Foundation.

The day began with the boys getting into their safety gear and hearing about what they were going to see and experience. The boys were taken on a tour of the workshop and into the open cut pit to see what life is like at the coalface and to gain an insight into what a future career in the resources sector would involve.

The boys then spent some quality time talking all things mining, asking informative questions of the Moolarben team about their career paths and typical workday onsite. They even got a feel for what driving some of the heavy machinery is like via the expert simulator.

Moolarben Coal General Manager, Brian Wesley welcomed the opportunity to have the boys onsite.

“The Clontarf Foundation play a positive and active role in our community running a program that assists young men to achieve through education and opportunities.

“You can see the students are extremely interested in what the jobs onsite entail and had plenty of questions, which is always pleasing.

“We were also delighted that one of our operators who is a successful Clontarf Academy graduate joined us for the day. He was able to share his career journey with the boys and be a strong mentor for these young men.

“We are proud to be involved with the Clontarf team and pleased we can offer a hands-on experience and open their minds to a possible career in mining. We look forward to welcoming more students onsite in the future,” said Brian.

The partnership with the Clontarf Foundation brings learning to life and ensures the students have their minds opened to successful career opportunities.

Mason Williams from the Wellington Clontarf Academy said, “The boys found the visit to Yancoal’s Moolarben Coal mine both fascinating and exciting. It was great hearing how engaged they were on the tour and in the question-and-answer session, opening their minds to a potential career in mining”.

Yancoal is a national sponsor of The Clontarf Foundation via its Community Support Program.
