Moreton Island @ The Coalface

If you’re looking for an escape that combines island charm, delicious food, outdoor adventure, and wildlife encounters, a day cruise to Moreton Island might just tick all the boxes. Recently, the @ The Coalface team hopped aboard a See Moreton day cruise, turning it into the ultimate girls’ trip packed with excitement, relaxation, and a touch of nature’s magic.

Departing from Rivergate Marina in Brisbane, the journey began with a sense of anticipation as we cruised towards Moreton Island. While the marina was a little out of the way for those not familiar with Brisbane, the adventure ahead quickly made up for the logistical hiccup (note to self: pre-plan your Uber ride for the return trip!).

Once aboard, the day unfolded with an array of activities to suit every pace. For the thrill-seekers, there was the chance to snorkel around the famous Tangalooma Wrecks, a haven for vibrant marine life. The water was crystal clear, and the reef fish were everywhere, creating an underwater spectacle that felt like swimming through a living postcard. Alternatively, stand-up paddleboarding offered a unique way to soak up the stunning surrounds, or you could simply kick back on the sandy shores and let the world drift by. It’s hard to beat the allure of golden beaches and turquoise waters.

One of the most memorable parts of the day was spotting some of the incredible wildlife that calls Moreton Bay home.

From dolphins to sea turtles, the marine life was nothing short of amazing. We even learned about Douggie, the resident dugong, who grazes in the seagrass meadows. Expert guides on the Cruise added an educational element, sharing insights into the natural and cultural heritage of the area. Their commentary fostered a deeper connection with the incredible ecosystem around us.

Fuelled by adventure, the tropical buffet lunch was a standout. Picture this: succulent Gold Coast Ocean King prawns, maple-glazed baked ham carved fresh off the bone, ginger soy-marinated chicken, Mediterranean pasta salad, and soft damper-style bread rolls, all bursting with flavour and freshness. If that wasn’t enough, the staff later brought around trays of tropical fruit for afternoon tea, which added a refreshing and sweet finish to the day.

A big shoutout to the See Moreton team, especially Sarah, Ema, and Kayla. Their warmth, humour, and attention to safety ensured everyone felt at ease while embracing the fun.

Of course, no experience is without its quirks. While the island’s natural beauty was undeniable, the beach felt a bit overrun, not just with tourists but also with a steady stream of 4WD vehicles. It’s worth keeping to the sand dunes for safety if you’re planning to settle in. Moreton Island’s popularity is a double-edged sword, while it’s bustling with energy, the sheer volume of visitors might not suit those seeking a more secluded escape.

Back at Rivergate Marina, the day wrapped up with a less-than-ideal wait for a ride back to the city. Ubers were scarce due to the location, but a trusty old taxi came to the rescue, bringing an end to what was otherwise a memorable adventure.

Just don’t forget to make the most of that incredible buffet included with the cruise, it’s the perfect way to fuel up for an unforgettable day of adventure and relaxation!
