Moranbah BMX Club has been a cornerstone of the local sporting community since 1985, when founding President Gary Vane and a group of passionate locals brought the vision of a BMX track to life.
“It’s said that Gary moved to Moranbah around 1983 and quickly started asking around to see if there was interest in building a track. Once he had enough support, the club was formed, and four decades later, it’s still going strong,” said Club President Mark Reichelt.
“Hitting 40 years is such a massive achievement. It’s a testament to the strength of the Moranbah community and the dedication of our riders, families and supporters. This milestone isn’t just about our club, it’s a celebration of everyone who has helped keep BMX alive and thriving in our town.”
Over the years, Moranbah BMX has seen its fair share of highs and lows but through it all, they’ve maintained a strong committee and a tight-knit BMX family.
The club’s facilities have also come a long way. What started as a traditional dirt track has evolved into a modern, all-weather venue with a sealed track, berms, a pro start gate and lighting towers. These upgrades have not only improved racing conditions but have also elevated the club’s ability to host major competitions.
“One of our key goals is to build a large multi-purpose facility that will include a registration hut, canteen, toilets and showers. This would bring us in line with some of the top clubs in Southeast Queensland and make a huge difference for riders, families and event visitors.”
Despite these upgrades, the heart of the club remains the same.
“No matter how much we grow, one thing that hasn’t changed is our love for the sport and the pride we take in our track.”
To mark the milestone, the club is hosting a 40th Anniversary and Reunion event at the Moranbah Miners Rugby League Club on Sunday, May 4, from 4pm to 8pm, following their annual Weekend of Madness race meet.
“Expect a showcase of old-school BMX bikes and memorabilia, live music, and plenty of food to keep the energy high. It’s a chance for past and present members, visiting riders, and supporters to come together, share stories, and relive some of the club’s greatest moments.”

This year’s Weekend of Madness is set to be one of the biggest yet, with a $21,000 prize pool attracting top riders from across the country and more than 400 riders anticipated to compete.
“Our Male and Female Superclass events have a massive $10,000 combined prize pool, aiming to bring some of the best pro riders to Moranbah. We are excited to bring back the hype of Moranbah’s Weekend of Madness and make it the unmissable event on the BMX calendar.”
Other key competitions include Ethan Stevens Memorial Cup (13-year-olds) – $1,000 prize pool, Junior Superclass (Ages 14-16) – $2,500 combined prize pool and Masters Category (Veteran riders) – $2,500 prize pool.
Beyond the races, Moranbah BMX has always been about fostering a love for the sport and giving back to the community. The club encourages newcomers to get involved through initiatives like their Come & Try Day and four-week free trials, which allow beginners to experience BMX without financial pressure.
“We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, supportive and family-friendly club where riders of all levels can develop their skills and passion for BMX.
“We make it easy for anyone to give BMX a go, whether they’re brand new or getting back into it. Whether it’s riding, volunteering, or sponsoring, there’s a place for everyone in the Moranbah BMX family.”
