Yancoal offers a range of programs to high school students, university students and graduates, all aimed at helping to kickstart careers in the resources sector.

Demonstrating a commitment to developing talent in the mining sector, Yancoal invest in a number of professional development programs including their Graduate, Vacation and Cadetship Programs.

Daniel Norton is studying geology at the University of Newcastle and recently participated in Yancoal’s 2022 Vacation Program based out at Mount Thorley. The program provided Daniel with an invaluable learning experience to complement his studies. In addition, later this year Daniel will be commencing the Yancoal Graduate Program which will enable him to develop his knowledge and skills even further.

Daniel shared how thankful he is for the opportunity to be participate in these career changing programs.

“My time on the Yancoal Vacation Program has been both exciting and daunting at the same time. I was quickly welcomed into the team who helped me along my journey through both theoretical knowledge and hands on field work out in the big open pit,” said Daniel.

“To be able to meet so many people and learn about the work they do and to see up close how the mine operates has been eye opening.

“What really stood out to me about Yancoal are their commitment to their values. This was evident in the day-to-day lifestyle where everyone had an invested interest in helping me develop my skills and knowledge.”

Due to start the Graduation Program later this year, Daniel said he couldn’t wait to jump straight into it. His positive experience with the Vacation Program leaving him eager to have a more hands on role.

“I’m excited about how it will allow me to experience different aspects of the geology role in both underground and open cut as well as experience the different mining processes.

“I believe it will be a valuable stepping stone into forging the right career for me. Not only because of the knowledge, skills and experience I will gain, but also due to the relationships I will build in the industry. I feel very privileged to have been given these opportunities.”

Yancoal Graduate Program

The two-year rotational program offers positions in electrical engineering, mechanical/mechatronic engineering, mining engineering, geology and surveying. Covering both technical training and ‘hands on’ mining experience, participants work at the coal face in both underground and open cut and also undertake development training in a corporate setting.

The 2023 Graduate Program is now open for applications and will close on Friday April 29.

Yancoal Cadetship Program
The program is for current Year 12 high school students and recent high school graduates wanting to begin their university studies in Mining Engineering and to develop a career in mining. The program provides financial support, mentoring and valuable ‘hands on’ experience at mine sites.

The 2023 Cadetship Program will open for applications in May 2022.

Yancoal Vacation Program

The program provides 10-12 weeks of paid work experience for university students during their university vacation period (November to February). It enables participants to implement their theoretical knowledge in a practical environment, whilst offering a pathway towards a mining career. 

The 2023 Vacation Program will open for applications in October 2022.
