Glencore @ The Coalface

Applications are now open for the 2027 Glencore Coal Apprenticeship Program. The program is the perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door with Australia’s largest coal producer and find a rewarding career in one of the country’s most vital sectors.

Currently, 281 apprentices are part of Glencore’s Australian coal operations. The Program provides a unique blend of hands-on learning and industry exposure, giving apprentices the opportunity to earn a nationally qualified trade qualification while earning a competitive salary.

Those were the big drawcards for Elizabeth Kelly who is a second year auto electrical apprentice with Glencore at their Clermont operation in Central Queensland.

“I always had plans to go and work in the mines because of the opportunity for long-term employment and the opportunity to work on bigger gear. Glencore had some great perks that came with the job as well as competitive pay.

“The roster is great as an apprentice too – I am on permanent days, seven-on, seven-off until my fourth year so I get to work across two different crews. The people I work with are definitely one of the best parts of the job.

“Everyone has their own strengths and carries a lot of knowledge so if you can’t find the answer with one person there’s always someone else who will know the answer,” said Elizabeth.

Another thing Elizabeth loves is that she can try different parts of the operation and see which fits her best.

“At the moment I’m with the heavy vehicles, then I’ll move into the field then into the light vehicle bay, so you get to experience all the different machinery and get a feel for what you might like. The digger crew is my favourite so far!”

Elizabeth is also undertaking her auto electrical trade as a dual qualification.

“My first trade is auto electrical, then I move into Operational Technologies, focusing on mine communications; for example, two-way radios. The dual apprenticeship is a lot of work, but it’s a great opportunity if you grab it with both hands and make the most of it.”

Glencore Coal Human Resources Manager, Stella De Best, said the four-year program offers opportunities to develop practical skills while working alongside experienced industry professionals.

“As apprentices gain real industry experience, they not only learn technical skills but also develop essential soft skills in communication, teamwork, and leadership,” Stella said.

“At Glencore, we believe in investing in our talent, and our Apprenticeship Program serves as an entry point for aspiring tradespeople to learn, contribute, and thrive in a supportive and challenging environment.”

Featuring a mix of onsite, offsite and TAFE training, apprentices can explore regional Queensland, with positions available across Glencore Coal operations in Central Queensland and in NSW.

Applications are now open and close on Monday 18 May 2026.

Successful applicants will commence their apprenticeship in January 2027.
