The moment I turned off the bitumen and onto the winding dirt road to Mt Jukes Eco Retreat, about a 30 minute drive from Mackay, the outside noise began to fall away. There was a stillness in the landscape that felt old and steady, the quietness of an ancient landscape.
The retreat began in the purpose built yoga shala with a science based yoga session led by host Dave. This session was designed to prepare the body for the deeper meditation work that would follow. The movements focused on opening the joints, building gentle heat through the muscles, steady breathing and awareness through the body. It was not rushed and suited a wide range of abilities, with options given throughout.
From there, we moved straight into guided breathwork meditation. This form of meditation is widely used to support nervous system regulation, reduce stress levels, slow the heart rate and improve oxygen flow through the body. The shift from movement into stillness was noticeable. The room settled quickly and there was a shared sense of calm.
Next came the heat and cold contrast, first into the infrared sauna, then straight into the natural volcanic spring that runs through the property. The spring flows through ancient rock beneath the rainforest canopy.
Floating on my back, looking up through the trees with birds calling above, felt like a full reset for both body and mind.
Lunch was an Ayurveda inspired farm to plate meal prepared by Aune. The food was not only fresh and full of flavour, it felt like a reset for the body after the morning practice. It also offered real inspiration to continue these food choices at home.
After eating, some of us explored the food forest, which holds more than 350 fruit trees across over 50 varieties, supported by booklets that explain their origins and uses. Others chose hammocks by the creek and simply rested.

The final session of the day was vibrational sound meditation inside the timber sound shell. Singing bowls and gongs filled the space with slow layers of sound. This form of meditation is commonly used to support deep relaxation, assist with emotional release and improve sleep quality.
The session closed with herbal teas including chai, lemongrass and tulsi, also known as holy basil. Tulsi is a sacred Ayurvedic herb known for its ability to calm the mind, uplift the spirit and restore balance. Homemade sweets followed before everyone made their way home.
In today’s fast paced lifestyles, this retreat offers a full body reset. The movement, meditation, food, heat, cold and stillness work together to clear physical tension and mental load. You leave having moved with purpose, eaten well, slowed your breathing, cleared your head and rested properly. also encourages people to carry these practices and food choices back into everyday life.
Mt Jukes Eco Retreat also offers overnight weekend escapes and group bookings for workplaces and private groups. For me, the day was a reminder of how powerful it can be to step away from routine and give both body and mind the space to reset.
