Moranbah Touch Football Association launched its first FAST 4 Mental Health Touch Football Competition with quick footy, creative uniforms and a strong crowd supporting the cause behind the event.

The competition delivered plenty of action across junior and senior divisions while placing mental health and suicide prevention at the centre of the day.

Club President David Elia said the idea was to keep things simple, enjoyable and meaningful.

“We wanted a fun and fast touch competition that encouraged fitness and enjoyment, but also a chance to bring people together to talk about mental health. Supporting Beyond Blue’s Lifeline service has been central to this event from day one.”

The focus on mental health came from a place the whole town understands. Moranbah has experienced loss to suicide over many years, with men making up a large portion of those deaths.

“Our town has felt this loss many times. As a club, we want to help break the stigma and encourage people to reach out. If we can play even a small part in preventing further loss, then we want to.”

Eight senior teams and four junior teams took part, taking on the fast format that encouraged creativity and a relaxed style of play. Plenty of players turned up in themed kits and enjoyed the quick pace while still putting in real effort on the field. Run It Up won the senior division with consistent play across the day, while the Green Team took the junior title with a strong performance.

David said the most meaningful moment came during presentations.

“The minute of silence, the candle lighting, the new logo and the kids’ handprint canvas created for loved ones lost brought the community together in a way that you could feel.”

The competition helped boost awareness of Beyond Blue’s support services and reinforced the message that talking about mental health is important and encouraged. The club hopes events like this remind people they are not alone and that support is available at any time.

With junior trials, grand finals and Waitangi Day events coming up, the club is preparing for a busy season and David said they welcome anyone wanting to be involved.

“We always welcome new players, volunteers and committee members. There is a place for everyone here.”

FAST 4 Mental Health was supported by sponsors BMA, ABM Group, BUMA, MEU Peak Downs and Hoses24, along with partners, committee members and volunteers who helped bring the day together.
