If there’s one event that brings the coal preparation community together – to learn, connect and celebrate – it’s the ACPS National Conference and Exhibition.
In 2026, the Australian Coal Preparation Society (ACPS) marks its 60th Anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than by looking to the future?
Held from 15–19 March 2026 at Rydges Resort in the Hunter Valley, the conference promises four packed days of learning, collaboration and connection for anyone involved in coal preparation – from operators and engineers to researchers, students and technology providers.
“It’s the premier technical and professional development event for our industry,” said ACPS National Chairperson Chris Thornton.
“Our role has always been to help the Australian coal preparation industry maintain world’s best practice and this conference is that the cornerstone of our society – a place to share knowledge and experience and strengthen connections so everyone can further develop and improve the industry as a whole.
“The conference promotes collaboration across both disciplines and companies, which allows people to interact and take away ideas and innovations that can significantly improve the efficiency in their own operations.”
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or new to the field, the conference offers a unique opportunity to stay current with the latest developments in coal preparation. Local and international experts will share new research, practical insights and real-world examples on improving plant performance, reliability and efficiency.
For employers, Chris said the benefits extend well beyond the event itself.
“The theme of energizing the future was deliberately chosen for people are the future of the industry, specifically graduates and apprentices.
“These events allow younger staff who may be new to the industry to learn from highly experienced people and then combine this knowledge with their natural energy and enthusiasm to go back to their sites and companies and improve safety, productivity and plant reliability.
“The conference is the best way for a manager to invest in your teams.”
Among the technical highlights will be Professor Quentin Campbell from North-West University, presenting a keynote on Fine Coal Dewatering and Processing – and posing a big question: has the field reached its goals yet? His research explores emerging methods for reducing moisture content in fine coal, including the use of porous ceramics as a moisture sorbent.
This is just one example of the kind of cutting-edge knowledge attendees can expect. Dozens of technical papers will offer fresh perspectives and practical takeaways to help optimise plant management and metallurgical performance.

Alongside the technical program, the exhibition floor will feature over 40 exhibitors showcasing the latest equipment, services and innovations.
“It’s a fantastic chance to see new technology up close and talk directly with the people behind it,” said Chris.
“There is a lot of innovation happening in the coal preparation industry right now and being able to interact with the key innovators and see and touch the new equipment provides a level of learning that cannot be matched by reading a brochure.”
Of course, it’s not all about technology and the technical talks. Chris said the social side of the conference is just as valuable, offering plenty of chances to unwind, share ideas and build professional networks that last long after the event ends.
“From the Welcome Function to the Gala Ball, the conference has plenty of ways to connect with peers from across the mining, metallurgy and processing sectors. There’s even a Partners Program, with curated experiences throughout the week for those joining attendees in the Hunter Valley.
“The conversations that happen over coffee or at a dinner often lead to collaboration and innovation. That’s part of what makes this conference and the ACPS as a whole so valuable – the sense of community and shared purpose.”
So, mark your calendar for March 2026 and get ready to be part of the community shaping the next chapter of coal preparation.
