This year’s Moranbah Australia Day Triathlon saw Aaron Daniel take out the Duathlon category. From running to improve his health to competing in endurance events, Aaron’s journey has been one of steady progress and determination.
“Initially, I started running and exercising to lose weight and improve my overall health and fitness,” shared Aaron.
“I’d occasionally go along to my wife Tina’s training sessions, and that’s where I really started to enjoy running. That’s where it all began. Now, I run, which is my favourite and strongest leg, and I ride. Swimming, though… I’m terrible at it.”
Aaron credits his wife, Tina, as a major influence on his journey.
“Tina has been competing in triathlon for years, including the Moranbah Australia Day Triathlon. She has inspired me to take part and keep pushing myself.”
While he never really set out to chase the sport seriously, Aaron still found himself drawn in.
“Thinking back, I can’t pinpoint a moment where I thought, ‘I’m going to pursue this.’ It came from attending events with Tina, supporting her and her teammates. One year, she asked me to do the run leg of a triathlon as a birthday request, and from that moment, we started teaming up, me running and Tina swimming and riding.”
Balancing training with his role as Maintenance Manager at Whitehaven’s Daunia Mine hasn’t been easy, but he has found a rhythm that works.
“It’s hard work making the time, but early morning runs have been great for me physically and set me up for a good day ahead.”
His biggest challenge has been self-belief.

“Having the confidence to actually compete in events was daunting at first. It’s easy to exercise in isolation, but signing up and racing against others was a big step. The support and encouragement I’ve received has made it easier, and very enjoyable.”
Winning the Duathlon this year was a milestone moment.
“This was my first event win, and it felt good to get that result. Since I’m a terrible swimmer, the Duathlon suits me because it replaces the swim leg with an extra run. So, it’s a run, then ride, then run again. Lucky I like running!”
Aaron has taken on some tough events over the past year, including the Hamilton Island Hilly Half Marathon, Mackay Marina Run and the Blackdown Tablelands Up Down Black Down Trail Run.
“A few years ago, I never would have imagined completing races like these, but each one has been an achievement that reflects how far I’ve come.”
For 2025, new challenges await.
“This year, I’m trying my hand at my first ultra trail run, the Yandina 50 in March. I’m also keen to do my first full marathon, but I haven’t locked that in just yet.”
For those who are considering getting into the sport, Aaron has simple advice.
“Don’t be afraid to start. There are plenty of groups catering for all levels, from beginners to international competitors. All the ones I’ve been involved with are friendly and supportive. Moranbah even has a Park Run now, which is a great way to build a habit, starting the weekend with 5km of fun, no pressure. Walk, jog, or go for your next PB.
“And it’s a great excuse for a post-run coffee!”
