Coppabella @ The Coalface

The Coppabella community gathered in February to celebrate the official opening of the Coppabella Community Centre, a facility designed to provide essential services and social opportunities for workers, families, and young people living in the railway town.

Coppabella was established in the early 1970s as a railway town to support the rapidly expanding coal mining operations in the Bowen Basin. Strategically built to facilitate the transportation of coal from the region to export terminals, it has played a key role in the movement of resources across Central Queensland. Over time, Coppabella has grown into a community where mining and railway workers live and work, shaping the town’s identity.

The Coppabella Community Centre was made possible through a partnership between QRI Services, Isaac Regional Council, AMPM Builders, and the Coppabella Community Club, along with strong industry and community support.

The facility is expected to enhance liveability for those working and living in the region by offering a dedicated space for education, digital literacy, job training and social connection. QRI Services has been instrumental in bringing the centre to life, ensuring it meets the needs of Coppabella’s workers, families and young people.

Kylie Stanley, Project Manager of QRI Service Village, spoke on the significance of the new facility and its impact on fostering a strong and connected community in a railway and mining-dominated town.

“This journey began with a simple idea, a homework club. We noticed a need for a dedicated space where the children of Coppabella could come together, support each other, and access resources for their studies.

“But as we started planning, we realised the potential for something so much bigger. We envisioned a hub, a place where everyone in Coppabella could connect, learn and grow. A space that would foster a stronger sense of community, and provide essential services and technology for all.”

Mayor Kelly Vea Vea addressed the community at the opening, acknowledging the role the centre will play in supporting the local community.

“This will be more than just a building for Coppabella, this will be a place where friendships are formed, where connections are made and skills developed. This will be a place of celebration and community conversation that will grow with the community for years to come.

“For the kids of Coppabella, it’s easy to feel like you’re coming from a really little place, but what I have found while I have been out in the Isaac region is that so many people have lived here. One of Australia’s most famous athletes Kathy Freeman went to primary school here. This is a little place that does big things, and this is the next era of big things for Coppabella.”

The centre features a computer lab to help bridge the digital divide, a homework club will provide students with a dedicated learning space and an event and learning space will serve as a hub for industry-related training, community meetings and recreational activities. A small library has also been included, fostering lifelong learning and access to resources for all residents.

Recognising the mental health and social benefits of green spaces, the community garden will offer a shared area where residents can connect with nature, grow food and build community spirit.

The Coppabella Community Centre is set to become a key part of the town’s future, providing essential services and fostering a strong sense of belonging. As the facility continues to evolve, community feedback will play an essential role in shaping programs and initiatives.
