The Singleton Town Band has been part of the fabric of the Singleton community since it was established in 1878 and has been performing at key events ever since in their iconic red blazers.
The annual Bands in Concert is held at the end of each year and it’s not only a chance to showcase the band’s talents, but it’s also the band’s major fundraiser so they can continue providing music to the community.
President Kyle Kermode is a Life Member of the Singleton Town Band. He joined in 2004, playing the trumpet at 12 years old.
“The band has been going for 146 years so it’s great that we can continue that tradition.
“We have over 50 consistent members at the moment and there are some others who come and go depending on where life takes them,” he said.
“Having been a part of the community since 1878, Singleton has not ever known a special occasion without the Singleton Town Band. As a kid I remember seeing the band in the ANZAC march and thinking how amazing they were! Now our red jackets are a bright reminder of the history and talent in our town!”
We asked some of the younger members of the Singleton Town Band why they love being part of the band and why they think it’s so important to have in their local community.
“We get to make new friends, explore new melodies and I like hearing the oldies crack jokes,” said Brydie.
“I like hearing the music, and I love learning something new from people who have a love of music like me,” Addie explained.
Willow only started playing a couple of years ago and she loves it.
“When I sit down and play my instrument preparing for a performance, I am normally very nervous! But when I actually start playing with my bandmates, I feel comforted and confident because everyone is always looking out for us.
“It is so important Singleton can have a town band because it truly enhances the town’s happiness!”
All the members agree it’s a very inclusive part of the community, and no matter what your skill level everyone is welcomed in.
The Singleton Town Band relies heavily on the generosity of Singleton’s business owners and all contributions directly enable the members to continue supporting the community through their passion for music by keeping the band hall in good condition, paying their insurance and utilities, maintaining the instrument inventory and purchasing new sheet music to keep their repertoire current.
