This month the Complete Parts and @ The Coalface $500 Community Gift goes to the Rockhampton Food Bank, a service aimed at supporting its community’s most pressing needs.
The Rockhampton Food Bank, an initiative by Hands of Compassion Inc., originally started in Logan City in 2006 and in 2017 extended its mission to Rockhampton, responding to the community’s call for aid.
It was a journey of dedication that saw the orgnaisation go from providing affordable groceries in Logan and Capalaba to supporting global causes to raise funds for building wells in the Philippines and safe houses in South Africa (hence the addition of World Aid Inc.). The organisation then turned its focus to addressing Rockhampton’s needs.
Under the stewardship of Mal and Lisa, the Rockhampton Food Bank has grown into a cornerstone for over 3,000 families, offering weekly access to essential food supplies, clothing, books, shoes and household items at no cost.
The service is more than a food bank; it’s a community hub where up to 100 individuals gather every Thursday and Friday, not just for the food, but for a sense of belonging and support, highlighted by the communal BBQ breakfasts on Fridays.
Volunteering at the Food Bank doesn’t require special skills, only a commitment to service and a positive spirit. This inclusive approach has fostered a volunteer community comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds, including participants from the Endeavour Foundation and Special schools, showcasing the inclusive nature of the initiative.
The Food Bank’s reach extends beyond immediate needs, offering a school breakfast program in partnership with Foodbank Queensland that currently benefits four local schools. This program is essential in ensuring that children start their day ready to learn, and underscores the Food Bank’s broader impact on Rockhampton’s future generations.
Despite challenges, including the operational hurdles presented by the pandemic, the Rockhampton Food Bank has persevered, driven by community and local business support. Backing that has been crucial in sustaining and expanding their services and reflects a collective effort towards community wellbeing.
Rockhampton Food Bank stands as a testament to what can be achieved when compassion leads the way, promoting greater community involvement and making a significant difference in the lives of many in Rockhampton.
