COMMUNITY GIFT – DYSART MEN’S SHED

In communities like Dysart, it often starts with a simple idea, a few people around a table asking how they can bring others together. For the Dysart Men’s Shed, that idea began in April 2023 when a group of locals came together with a goal to create a place where men could connect, share skills and support each other.

The vision for Dysart Men’s Shed was about more than conversation. From the beginning, the group wanted to build something that could also support the wider community. But finding a permanent home took time. The group only gained access to its site at 27 Pony Club Road in late 2025, and much of the focus since then has been on restoring the facilities and preparing the space for members and community use.

Treasurer Terry Thane said the early days were about starting from nothing.

“We started from scratch with no actual premises, so at this point we are working on restoring the facilities to a level that allows us to grow and involve the community.”

Even in its early stages, Terry said the shed is already offering what the founders hoped it would.

“Mateship and a place to relax and have a conversation, share a joke.”

Each Sunday morning between 7am and 11am the shed opens its doors for a regular gathering, with any man over the age of 18 welcome to drop in for a cuppa and a chat.

While the shed itself continues to take shape, the group has already become a familiar presence around Dysart through its support of community events. Volunteers regularly run BBQs at markets and town functions, helping at Christmas parties, Carols by Candlelight, Australia Day celebrations, the Dysart Rodeo, golf club events and local sporting clubs.

Terry said that support has been matched by generosity from across the Dysart community.

“The bakery supplies bread and buns for our BBQs, Civeo has donated meat and set up a $1,000 prepaid account at the local hardware store, and Dysart Home Hardware has donated tools and equipment for raffles.”

He said local trades and businesses had also played an important role in helping restore the shed’s facilities.

“Aquaflow Plumbing, Lous Contracting and Devine and Sons Electrical have all donated labour and materials, and Isaac Regional Council has supported the project as it develops.”

That community backing was recognised earlier this year when the Dysart Men’s Shed received the Mayor’s Australia Day Award for Dysart.

“Being awarded the Mayor’s Australia Day Award for Dysart this year was a highlight for all of us.”

As this month’s Coalface Community Gift recipient, the group will put the $500 towards improvements to its main meeting shed, helping create a more functional space for members to gather.

The Dysart Men’s Shed is a registered charity and welcomes support from businesses and residents. Donations of money, services or items that can be sold or raffled all help the group continue its work, with supporting businesses recognised on the shed’s honour board.

For anyone considering getting involved, Terry’s invitation is simple.

“Turn up for a cuppa and a chat, bring new ideas and skills to share with others and find a place to belong.”
