Blackwater Arts Society Community Gift

This month the Complete Parts and @ The Coalface $500 Community Gift goes to the Blackwater Arts Society, a canvas for community connection.

The Blackwater Art Society (BAS) has become a hub of creativity and connection, offering a diverse range of workshops and events that cater to artists and art lovers of all ages in the small central Queensland mining town.

“The Blackwater Art Society is more than just a place to learn art; it’s a place where the community comes together to share, create, and inspire,” said Dianne Martyn, a local artist and club President who regularly conducts workshops at the society.

Upcoming workshops feature a variety of mediums and techniques, including charcoal and ink by Catherine Dowden, watercolour techniques by Andrea Chapman, pastels by Maxine Thompson and pottery by Amanda Fernie.

“These workshops are designed to provide enriching experiences that spark joy and inspiration,” said Dianne.

Art has a unique power to connect people, and BAS leverages this to enhance community engagement.

“We have activities ranging from after-school classes for children to adult sessions on Friday nights, all aimed at fostering a supportive and creative community.

“Our Monday classes are incredibly popular with the children, providing them a creative outlet after school. And our adult sessions are great to socialise and connect, aiding with mental health and general wellbeing of our members.”

Dianne said one memorable outcome from the society’s programs was a recent drawing workshop conducted for a local mining company.

“It was a team-building event that brought us more exposure and was a lot of fun for everyone involved. We’re open to creating more of these personalised experiences.”

As a not for profit organisation, donations are critical for BAS. As this month’s Community Gift recipient, BAS will use the $500 donation to upgrade the club hall, enhancing the space for future activities.

Looking to the future, Dianne shared their ambitious plans.

“Our vision is to reactivate the pottery sector here at the club. We’re looking for people with the skills and passion to help us revive this art form in our community.”

The society encourages community members to get involved, whether by attending workshops, volunteering, or simply spreading the word.

“There’s no shortage of ways to contribute. From mopping floors to mentoring others, every bit of help enriches our community.

“Art is about more than just skill, it’s about community, well-being and having fun. We welcome everyone to join us.”
