For 22 years, Judy Johnson has given her time to the Caneland Central Christmas gift wrapping stall, raising vital funds for BMA CQ Rescue and spreading Christmas cheer across the community.

“I joined through ESA International Alpha Rho Mackay and we did it for CQ Rescue. That was 22 years ago,” Judy said.

“It is a good cause and a good service to the community. I like Christmas, you meet wonderful people and work with wonderful people.”

Now set up until Christmas Eve each year, the stall operates from two locations inside Caneland Central, one near Target and another outside Myer. Judy volunteers every day.

“We even have craft night, that is where we get creative and make all the bows and decorations that go on the wrapped gifts.”

Across more than two decades, there have been few surprises left on the wrapping table.

“Santa, really big things that could not get out of the trolley, big teddies, scooters, big bikes, all sorts of things. People bring pretty much anything, as long as it is for a donation.”

Behind the festive paper and bows sits a serious purpose. The stall raises important funds each year for BMA CQ Rescue and helps cover the high cost of life saving operations.

“People do not realise what it costs. They think they will never need it, but that is not true. You could have a heart attack and need the helicopter. People just do not understand how dedicated they are and how much it takes to keep it in the air.”

Judy’s community service extends beyond the wrapping stall, with ongoing volunteering through Scouts and support for the Sarina Ambulance.

What keeps her returning year after year is simple.

“I love to see the kids. That Christmas cheer, you only get it for a short time each year. No one can be angry with a smile, can they?”

The stall is supported by a steady stream of volunteers, many of whom decide to help on the spot.

“We have people that just come in off the street and start wrapping. Without the public support, none of this would happen.”

With Christmas fast approaching, Judy and her team will remain at their wrapping stations until Christmas Eve, turning ribbons and paper into meaningful support for a service that so often supports others on the hardest day of their lives.

Community members can volunteer or donate by visiting either of the gift wrapping stations at Caneland Central and adding their support to a cause that continues to serve the region year after year.
