After moving from the Philippines to Moranbah with her family to be closer together, Jixie Navarro has dedicated herself to volunteering and her willingness to step up has inspired many.

“My father was working abroad, and living apart was difficult. Moving here gave us a chance to be together again,” said Jixie.

“Although Moranbah is a small town, the community is incredibly supportive.”

Volunteering soon became a way to connect and contribute.

“I’ve always loved lending a helping hand, and now I can do more of it thanks to the close connections in town and the welcoming nature of the community. Being part of local initiatives has allowed me to give back while helping me feel more at home in Moranbah.”

Her latest contribution was taking the lead on Moranbah’s first Dementia Australia Memory Walk & Jog. For Jixie, the event was about proving that anyone can make a difference.

“What matters is stepping up and helping where it’s needed. You don’t always need a personal story to care, you just need the willingness to act.”

The cause was close to her heart because of the families she knew who were affected.

“Seeing how dementia affects families in communities and across Australia inspired me. Hosting a Dementia Australia event here was a chance to bring people together for something that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. It’s also a way to raise understanding of the cause, support families and make a real difference for those impacted.”

With more than 400,000 people living with dementia in Australia, Jixie wanted Moranbah to play its part.

“Knowing that hundreds of thousands of people are living with dementia across Australia, it is important to contribute in any way possible to make a positive difference.”

The response to her campaign showed the strength of Moranbah’s spirit.

“Friends, family, and the community have been incredible. People have donated, joined the 5K Walk and Jog, contributed raffle prizes or simply came along to show support. Others helped spread the word by sharing posts on social media and putting posters up around town. Local businesses also stepped in as sponsors, helping make this campaign possible.

“It’s inspiring to see how much can be achieved when everyone comes together.”

“Dementia affects so many families, and awareness is the first step toward support and understanding. Events like this bring communities together, spark conversation, and give people a way to make a meaningful difference.”

For Jixie, community is defined by action.

“Community in Moranbah means supporting each other, showing up when it matters, and working together to make a positive impact. I really find joy in volunteering at local events, helping with school initiatives, or simply offering time and support to others.”

Looking forward, she hopes her efforts inspire others to step up.

“For me, it’s about challenging myself to contribute. For the wider cause, it’s about supporting Dementia Australia’s work and encouraging ongoing engagement so the impact continues well beyond the event. This is a cause worth contributing to, and I plan to stay involved wherever possible.”

Jixie also hopes to see the Memory Walk & Jog become an annual tradition for Moranbah. She is a shining example of what it means to be a Community Champion, someone who sees a need, steps forward, and brings others along with her.
