Pickleball is a sport many in Australia might still be unfamiliar with but it’s rapidly gaining popularity across the globe. For Mackay’s own Chris Barbour, pickleball is more than just a growing trend, it’s become a passion, and soon he’ll have the opportunity to compete at the Australian Pickleball Championships in the Gold Coast.

Pickleball is a cross between tennis and badminton and the game is played on a smaller court with solid paddles and a lightweight ball with holes. It offers a fast-paced, engaging experience for players of all ages and abilities.

At 30 years old, Chris’s introduction to the sport was a bit of a chance encounter.

“I started pickleball at the PCYC while doing my volunteer work there. I thought it looked a lot like tennis, so I wanted to give it a try.”

That simple curiosity soon developed into a commitment as Chris discovered a love for the sport.

The fast-paced nature of pickleball has allowed him to hone his reflexes and improve his hand-eye coordination, two of the key skills he believes are essential for success in the game. His favourite part of the game is power hitting.

Chris has made impressive strides in pickleball, participating in two Queensland tournaments this year, one in Townsville and the other in Yeppoon.

“Playing in the two Queensland tournaments this year has been a highlight for me. I gained a lot more experience playing against better players, and it really helped me improve.”

For Chris, being invited to play in the Australian Pickleball Championships is an incredible opportunity and one he’s eager to make the most of.

“It means a lot to me to be invited to play in this event. I’m going to do my best and enjoy the opportunity provided.”

In preparation for the challenge, Chris has been focused on refining his skills and building up his game.

“I’ve been trying to get as many hits as possible at the Mackay Tennis Courts. The club and the members are always happy to help me improve and prepare for the national event.”

Recently, a fundraising pickleball session was held at the Mackay Tennis Association to support Chris’s journey to the national championships. The event, which took place in September, saw locals from all around come together to play with the session attracting players of all skill levels.

The evening BBQ provided a great opportunity for the community to rally behind Chris and the funds raised from the event are helping cover the costs of Chris’s trip to the Gold Coast.

The support from the community has meant a great deal to Chris and has played a key part in giving him the confidence to take on the country’s best players and represent his hometown at the Championships.

If you’re interested in trying pickleball or supporting local talent like Chris, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Whether you’re a beginner or have experience in other racquet sports, pickleball offers something for everyone and it’s a great way to stay active, socialise, and enjoy a fun, inclusive game.

“Pickleball is considered one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide. It’s only getting bigger and bigger as it gets more exposure, and it appeals to all ages and standards.”

That inclusiveness is something Chris values and he encourages anyone interested to give the sport a go.

“Come down and try it, it’s a great game. Bring some friends, family, or work colleagues and enjoy.”
