With Stage 1 successfully delivered and Stage 2 nearing completion, the Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE) is firmly focused on what comes next – and that future is taking shape in the Bowen Basin.
The momentum built through the first two stages of the RCOE vision which has created strong foundations for growth, collaboration and long-term impact. It has also reinforced the value of the partnerships that have underpinned the journey so far, including those with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), and both Federal and State Government.
According to RCOE CEO Steven Boxall, the next phase is a natural evolution of what has already been achieved.
“With the success of Stage 1 and Stage 2, we see this as a continuation and expansion of the partnerships we’ve built over time,” Steven said.
“These relationships have been critical in getting us to this point, and they will be just as important as we move into the next stage and grow our presence in the Bowen Basin.”
At the heart of this expansion is the Isaac Resource Excellence Precinct at Moranbah – Stage 3 of the RCOE’s strategic plan. Fully funded and valued at $42 million, the project is designed to support industry, innovation and workforce development while helping future-proof mining communities.
For the Bowen Basin, this investment is about much more than infrastructure.
Investing in the region means creating opportunities for local businesses, building pathways for skills and training, attracting new technologies and industries, and ensuring that regional communities remain strong, relevant and resilient as the resources sector continues to evolve.
It also means keeping value in the region – from jobs and capability development through to innovation and supply chain growth – while supporting the transition to future industries alongside traditional mining.
Mayor Kelly Vea Vea of Isaac Regional Council said the project represents a significant opportunity for the region and its people.
“The Isaac Resource Excellence Precinct is about investing in our communities and ensuring the Bowen Basin continues to thrive,” she said.
“This project supports local jobs, strengthens industry capability and reinforces Moranbah’s role as a key centre for innovation and excellence in the resources sector.”
As the project moves from planning into delivery, 2026 will mark a major step forward, with construction commencing in Moranbah and on-the-ground engagement ramping up.
The increased RCOE presence will see closer collaboration with local industry, education providers and the community, as well as greater visibility of the work being done to support the future of the region.
Steven added community input will play a vital role in shaping the success of the project.
“Community feedback and local knowledge are incredibly valuable to us.
“This precinct is being built for the region, so it’s important that people have the opportunity to be involved, share their views and help inform how it develops over time.”
