BEHIND THE SCENES

WRHS @ The Coalface

Some of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service’s (WRHS) strongest supporters have their roots in the mining industry.

As a thank you for the industry’s support, a few lucky mining companies and employees, mostly in the Health and Safety side of the business, had a behind the scenes tour of the WRHS Belmont Base.

The tour gave the corporate sponsors an idea of what running an aeromedical helicopter service is all about. WRHS requires robust operational infrastructure including traffic control coordination, regulatory compliance with aviation authorities and strategic partnerships with emergency services.

Key elements of the Service include maintaining the fleet of helicopters, ensuring pilots meet stringent hour requirements and specialised training, providing flight doctors and paramedics with ongoing aeromedical education and coordinating with emergency medical dispatch systems.

Hunter Valley Regional Partnerships Officer Norma Burri said representatives from Bengalla, Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) and Thiess thoroughly enjoyed the day.

A special part of the day was that we were able to show our visitors, some of our new Medics “In Training” in action, as new recruits were undertaking some specialised training in aeromedical care.

“The Belmont base is one of three operational bases, and our visitors got to ask our crew and medic teams plenty of questions during the demonstrations.

“Another part of the day was a presentation to Hunter Valley Operations to say thank you for their recently donated iPads for our Air Crew,” said Norma.

“Days like these are truly unique and it was a wonderful experience to be able to share such a day with our wonderful supporters.”

Norma said she would love to organise more days to show sponsors in the region how important their support is.
