Anglo American’s commitment to creating thriving communities in the places where their people call home was showcased over the Christmas school holidays with the coordination of January school holiday activities in Moranbah.
Margaret Mary from Bottletops and Brushes hosted four classes, where 58 young artists were guided through a painting or drawing suitable for their skill level with subjects that included a beach landscape, fish, giraffe or anime figure.
“I had fun at the painting session. The instructor was very good at teaching, my favourite part was mixing all the colours. My painting came out way better than I thought it would. I would love to go to another class if they were on again,” Charlie, 11 years.
24 Moranbah youth keen to tackle complex problems attended a two-day Engineering, Robotics and Electronics Wonder Kidz Workshop. Through project-based learning students combined hardware, Lego compatible building blocks, and coding to create a prototype and solve real world problems.
“The first day was lots of fun, building the crane was super cool, on the second day we build a satellite and I was happy that my car was one of the best there, because it was fast. I learnt how to make the gears and the belt transmission move.” Truth, 9.
Both programs were completely sponsored by Anglo American and two Moranbah North vacation students, Cameron and Haemin volunteered their time at the engineering workshop and were able to assist students in building their own self-propelled Lego vehicles as part of the bricks challenge.
Not to disappoint the more sporting minded children, Anglo American will be hosting NRL and AFL school holiday clinics on the 4th and 5th of March (respectively). The NRL clinic will include coaching with the Mackay Cutters and both clinics will host a free BBQ lunch! For more information head to @AngloAmericanMoranbah Facebook page. |
