This month the Complete Parts and @ The Coalface $500 Community Gift goes to Miners’ Promise, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting mining families through times of unimaginable tragedy. In light of the recent fatalities, we are reminded of the importance of coming together as a close-knit mining community.

Founded in 2010 by Helen Fitzroy after the loss of her husband Steve in a mining accident, Miners’ Promise was born from a desire to fill the gap in support for mining families.

Today, the organisation stands as a vital pillar within the sector, offering tailored emotional, practical, and financial assistance through their Family Support Advisors.

“Our support is designed to be unique for each family, ensuring they have everything they need during such difficult times,” said Sarah Garvey, General Manager of Miners’ Promise.

Miners’ Promise provides a variety of services, including grief counselling, logistical support for funerals and financial assistance, all aimed at easing the immediate and long-term burdens families face after a mining tragedy.

“We don’t just help in the moment of crisis; we continue to support families as they navigate the difficult journey of grief.” 

The organisation’s work goes beyond immediate aid, offering long-term bereavement groups for both adults and children, ensuring that healing extends far beyond the initial impact.

The $500 donation will help Miners’ Promise continue its mission to provide essential services when they need them most.

Donations from the mining community are crucial in sustaining this ongoing work. Miners’ Promise also manages Memorial Funds on behalf of families, further strengthening their role in times of crisis.

Miners’ Promise’s work is not limited to families, they also provide expert advice to mining organisations, helping to standardise response protocols after on-site fatalities.

By working closely with industry leaders, they aim to ensure every family receives equitable support and foster a culture of preparedness within the sector.

One such story of their impact is that of Kevin and Sharyn Scholz, who tragically lost their son Nathan in an on-site accident.

“Miners’ Promise became part of our family, guiding us through our darkest times with compassion and practical support,” they shared.

Their Family Support Advisor helped them navigate the emotional and logistical challenges and continues to support their ongoing healing journey.

Miners’ Promise is also leading efforts to shift the culture within mining companies, promoting mental health and psychological well-being as integral parts of overall worker care. They collaborate with Employee Assistance Programs and mental health professionals to provide training and workshops that address the unique pressures of the mining industry.
